Mac Diarmid Institute for Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology

The organisation

The Mac Diarmid Institute for Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology was formed in 2002 as one of New Zealand's first Centres of Research Excellence, assisted with funding through a special Tertiary Education Grant for both capital equipment and operational expenses. We comprise around 40 Principal Investigators, 50 graduate students and 20 postdoctoral fellows, a critical mass of research capability involving a partnership between four universities and two Crown Research Institutes. Our aim is to enhance New Zealand's capability in nanoscience and nanotechnology and to benefit the country both through graduate student training and technology spin-off. The institute exemplifies an interdisciplinary approach, with scientists working at the interface between physics, chemistry, engineering and biology, both nationally and internationally. It links New Zealand with the world's best materials and nanotechnology research.

Kind of collaboration

Nanoforum and the MacDiarmid Institute aim to support academic and industrial researchers looking for partners and funding opportunities for international collaborations in nanotechnology. To enable this, both organisations publish a link, description and regularly updated news and events from the other organisation on their webportal.

News / events

New Zealand is developing a nanotechnology initiative with focus on energy applications; bio-nanotechnologies; nanophotonics, nanoelectronics and nano-devices; nanofluidics.

Every second year, the institute arranges an international conference. The next conference, Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology, AMN-3 will take place in Wellington, 11-16 February 2007.

Twice a year, in February and August, the institute publishes a magazine "Interface". Interface is concerned with telling the stories of institute researchers and their work. A "profile" of the institute is published once a year in March. Profile contains hard information on the publications and other outputs and includes brief profiles of each researcher.

The website www.macdiarmid.ac.nz is updated regularly and contains all the above information as well as information for prospective students, seminars, workshops, facilities, detailed information about institute research and other aspects of the institute.
